Child-Safe Launched in Bristol
An initiative to help protect children when they are taking part in activities away from home was launched in Bristol on Saturday 29 April 2006 at the Conservation Education Centre at Bristol Zoo Gardens.
The Child-Safe scheme aims to offer support, information and advice to all clubs and organisations involving children and young people to help them understand and deal with child protection issues.
In Bristol the scheme aims to safeguard some 40,000 children and young people through 2,000 organisations by supporting parents, volunteers and staff. It is designed to close the door of opportunity and prevent offenders easily reaching positions of trust.
Child-Safe is a national police-approved charity and this scheme has already been rolled out in other parts of the country. Bristol City Council has worked with the police and other members of the Bristol Child-Safe Partnership to develop the scheme.
Around 60 adults attended the launch along with 50-60 young people who were able to take part in arts, cycling and circus skills run by Amanda Sutton's 'Tattoo Mania' paint designs on a mate, Bristol Cycling Development Squad and Circusday.co.uk respectively. The Lord Mayor of Bristol Cllr Peter Abraham, Deputy Chief Constable Steve Otter from Avon and Somerset Police, High Sheriff Richard Lee, Deputy Lord Lieutenant Aroona Smith MBE, Heather Tomlinson, Director of Children and Young People's Services, and Commonwealth Games runner James Thie also attended.
Heather Tomlinson, Director of Bristol City Council's Children and Young People's Services, said: "Safeguarding children is everyone's business, and the Bristol Child-Safe Partnership are to be congratulated for their excellent work. I am grateful to Young People's Services for bringing Child-Safe into Bristol, and am confident that the initiative will have a major impact across the whole city"
Those involved with clubs and organisations are encouraged to sign up for monthly seminars which will be taking place across the city. By attending a seminar, clubs will receive help and guidance on setting up their own procedures and publicising them. All groups attending will receive a Bristol Child-Safe pack, designed for organisations involved in children and young people's activities to provide a safer environment. It gives all the necessary information required to develop an effective child protection scheme.
