Press Release - Chance to cycle the length of the UK for Child-Safe
Cyclists are being asked to take part in an epic charity cycle ride to raise funds and awareness for Child-Safe.
The Child-Safe charity, which encourages young people to be active, travel, learn and stay safe, was started by Avon and Somerset Constabulary and since its formation in 2004, has been active in many areas within the UK and across the globe.
The charity aims to provide practical advice, promote the safety, welfare and pastoral care of children and young people involved in travel, sport, community groups and specific school programmes. The initiative is about empowering young people, improving care and reducing opportunities of abuse in its widest sense. The charity promotes good practice, provides support and advice to parents, organisers, volunteers, schools and most importantly, children and young people themselves. Uniquely, the charity is endorsed by the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) and supported by the Department for Education and Skills (DfES), the United Nations World Tourism Organisation, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and many others.
Every year, members of the public join police officers and police staff on epic missions to raise money for the scheme. Last year, the team travelled to Cyprus to carry out walks, mountain bike rides and half marathons. In 2004, over 30 people cycled from coast to coast.
This year the challenge will be to cycle the length of the United Kingdom, from Lands End to John O’Groats.
The event is sponsored by RAA Sprague Gibbons, a recruitment advertising and communications agency based in Bristol, UK. The Managing Director, Peter Gibbons, will be one of the people taking part in the trip.
Cyclists will be travelling down to Lands End on Sunday May 20 and start the 12 day cycle ride the next morning.
So far, seven riders have signed up for the event and the organisers are looking for between three and five more people to complete the team.
They are also appealing for people to join the group as support, assisting the cyclists throughout the trip and sponsorship in the form of transport, preferably the loan of a van and minibus.
Chief Superintendent Chris Gould, Head of Child-Safe, Avon and Somerset Constabulary, said the cycle ride would be a tiring but worthwhile adventure.
“This really is one of the ultimate cycling challenges in this country and it’s all to benefit Child-Safe, working to prevent or reduce opportunities for our children being abused.
“We are currently talking to cyclists who have made this trip previously to work out the most enjoyable and productive route.
“Our previous events, especially the bike rides have been really successful and a lot of fun and we hope that the Lands End to John O’Groats trip will appeal to cyclists out there who are keen for a new challenge.”
The target is £1,000 sponsorship per rider. There is a non-refundable £100 deposit to sign up (however those that reach the sponsorship target will get their money back).
People who would like to take part in this event are asked to contact the Child-Safe office via the Child-Safe contact page on this website.
