MANAGING THE INTRODUCTION OF THE NEW VETTING & BARRING SCHEME (VBS) SEMINARS
Including the ‘Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act 2006’ and the introduction of the Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA)

Event kindly sponsored by ABG - For information on ABG (Arram Berlyn Gardner), please look under Links Page.

On Tuesday 29 September, Child-Safe hosted two V&BS seminars at Avon and Somerset Constabulary Police Headquarters in Portishead. Delegates attending the seminars came from a range of organisations inlcuding:

Commercial Hosting Organisations (host families)
Language schools
Educational & Cultural Youth Tours/Programmes (for both UK inbound/outbound & non UK inbound)
Guardianship Organisations
Local Co-ordinators/Tour Directors & Guides
Commercial Youth Travel Membership Associations

The seminars covered the new ‘Vetting & Barring Scheme (VBS)’ being phased in from 12 October 2009 and what impact that will have on organisations. It also looked at what new responsibilities employer will have? How the new laws will impact on recruitment? What the new duty to refer to the ISA will mean? The seminars were held to support organisations in making informed decisions about the future of their schemes and to give those organisers who are running them the latest information on the new legislation and good practice in managing the safety of young people. The new legislation should not be a barrier to offering these opportunities to young people, but rather part of the process of carefully planned risk and safety management.

If you want to find out further information regarding the new 'Vetting & Barring Scheme (VBS)' and how it may impact upon your organisation, please feel free to contact the Child-Safe office via e-mail childsafe@avonandsomerset.police.uk or telephone number 01275 816133. Child-Safe are happy to travel and talk to groups (large or small) or, alternatively, can offer offer bespoke 1:1 consultancy.
