The Child-Safe concept originated as an Avon and Somerset Constabulary innovation, focussed on reducing crimes against children, specifically in the area of abuse. Over time, the Charity has developed broader aims and objectives, re-focussing on the ever challenging area of safeguarding young people in the widest context. In line with the Government agenda in relation to Every Child Matters (www.everychildmatters.gov.uk) Child-Safe incorporates a wide range of universal safeguards within its products in order to prevent unsuitable people working with children. There is a strong emphasis on enabling youngsters to stay safe and helping organisations produce effective vetting and barring systems. Child-Safe has particular focus on targeting those vulnerable children or young people within society – those coming from homes where domestic violence, abuse or neglect is common place. Supporting schools through its work with the DCFS, (Department for Children, Schools and Families www.teachernet.gov.uk), Educational Visit Co-ordinators and Outdoor Education Advisers – www.evc-childsafe.co.uk), supporting parenting and enabling children to have greater opportunities in a safe and healthy environment. The charity also provides effective systems and signposting for young people and adults who want to report abuse or neglect. Through partnerships with law enforcement agencies and other statutory child protection organisations, Child-Safe is able to enable appropriate early intervention – which may lead to timely and effective investigations. Prevention of abuse and staying safe are the key objectives and outcomes of the charity. Our mission is: “To promote, enable, support and develop good practice to help safeguard children and young people from abuse or ill treatment, including but not limited to neglect, emotional, sexual and physical abuse, exploitation and mistreatment” Information about the Child-Safe Charity.
