Andy Williams - Honorary Trustee

A photograph of Andy Williams My name is Andy Williams and I am the Head of Public Protection for the Avon and Somerset Constabulary. I joined the Constabulary in 1988 having served 7 years with the Royal Navy. I was promoted to D/Superintendent as Head of Public Protection in May 2008.

I am married with two teenage daughters. As a family we enjoy holidays abroad, eating out, and the occasional trip to the theatre. My daughters are both keen drama and dance students with my youngest now playing football and rugby!

I have spent most of my career within the CID serving in South Bristol, Central Bristol, Bridewell and Trinity Road. I started my service at Broadbury Road where I later returned as a Sector Sergeant working very closely with key community members of Knowle West.

During my service I have worked on numerous major and serious crime investigations including murder, rape and serious public disorder. I was Deputy Senior Investigating Officer for the large scale public disorder that followed protests against the convicted paedophile, Sidney Cooke. I have performed the role of Senior Investigating Officer for the large scale public disorder involving Bristol City and Bristol Rovers supporters at Ashton Gate, two serial rape investigations as well as numerous murders and gang related shooting investigations.

I have spent much of my latter service working to reduce the harm caused by serious and organised crime. This has included being in charge of covert proactive operations across the Constabulary as well as being in charge of Atrium, the Constabulary’s operation to counter Class A drug supply.

As Head of Public Protection I have responsibility for Child Abuse, Domestic Abuse, Hate Crime, Missing Persons, Honour Based Violence, Forced Marriages, Female Genital Mutilation, Vulnerable Adults, Dangerous and Sexual Offenders, Hi-Tech Crime and Internet Child Abuse investigations. I have a keen interest in ensuring we do all we can to reduce risk and harm to the most vulnerable members of our community. I was therefore delighted to be invited to assist and support Child Safe as an Honourary Trustee. I am honoured and delighted to have been asked to join the Board and will do all I can to support the aims and objectives of Child Safe.
